Thanks for the zinc sparks, Dad! ✨ #HappyFathersDay 🤓🔬 #Repost @seed ・・・ Your first brush with science happened here: a sperm met an egg and sparks flew. 💥💥💥⠀ ⠀ The human egg cell accumulates some 20 billion zinc atoms in the 12 hours before ovulation, likely to signal the egg to stop maturing as it readies for a sperm. ⠀ ⠀ When that sperm comes along, it triggers calcium increase in the egg and prompts the first in a series of "zinc sparks", as billions of zinc atoms are released back out of the egg.
