@sophiabush : So I was nominated to participate in the #FashionOurFuture challenge by the lady boss herself, @jameelajamilofficial. I have loved learning about their mission because fashion is many things to many people & y’all know I love exploring complexity. Fashion is intertwined with identity in a very real way. Cultural. Learned. Earned. Aspirational. Attainable. It’s the stuff of dreams to some and utterly frivolous to others. To me it’s empowering, sometimes highly pressured, a thing I love & also don’t quite understand like some of the (seemingly) effortless experts out there. I love learning about its origins, its overt & sometimes hidden messages, its history of rebellion. But there’s a side to fashion we don’t often discuss. The pollution. The sweat shops. The slave labor. The impact on people & the planet. It can feel overwhelming, so we look away. And LOTS of things are overwhelming and sometimes sweaters make us happy, dammit. But here’s the thing. No one of us can solve it. No ONE of us can do everything. But we can all do SOMETHING. We can pledge to make our clothes last a little longer. We can do swaps with friends when we tire of something instead of buying new stuff. We can use rental services — like I did with this stunning @sally_lapointe fit from @worldarmarium (they have a stunning inventory!) for the Women In Media event in NY last winter! We can buy vintage or pre-loved goods — hiiii everyone who’s participated in my auctions & reduced waste! We can research how goods are made & commit to buying better (@fashionkind_). We can reduce water usage by purchasing clean cotton (@for___days) or clothes made from deadstock (hi @reformation). We can spend our money on fewer but better things, and thus invest in stuff we’ll keep for longer periods of time. We can donate clothes to programs that make housing insulation out of them, instead of sending them to landfills. If we all changed our consumption just a little, the results would be BIG! So, I encourage you to
