@sophiabush : Toni. Beloved. The name of one of my favorites of all of her books. The name that best describes her for so many, too. She touched the very core of countless hearts. • “We die,” She once said. “That may be the meaning of life. But we do language. That may be the measure of our lives.” • How does one write something halfway decent enough to commemorate one of our greatest writers? I don’t know how. But I will ruminate on her courage, her poignancy, and her gift for challenging us to be better. She told her students — and thus taught us all — “When you get these jobs that you have been so brilliantly trained for, just remember that your real job is that if you are free, you need to free somebody else. If you have some power, then your job is to empower somebody else.” Indeed. • And she reminded us, with perfect clarity, not to ever give into inaction. No matter what we might be up against. “This is precisely the time when artists go to work. There is no time for despair, no place for self-pity, no need for silence, no room for fear.
