@katiecouric : In honor of tomorrow’s swearing-in ceremony, I wanted to highlight @laurenaunderwood for today’s #WednesdayWomen. Lauren is the congresswoman-elect from Illinois’ 14th district, and at 32 years old will be one of the youngest members of Congress. She defeated four-term incumbent Randy Hultgren, who only two years earlier won his race by a 19 point margin. Lauren is a registered nurse and served as an advisor to the Department of Health and Human Services under the Obama Administration. Lauren was inspired to run for Congress after attending one of Randy Hultgren’s town halls where he promised he would only support a repeal of Obamacare if it included protections for people with pre-existing conditions. Hultgren later voted for a repeal bill that DID NOT include these protections. As a nurse and a woman with a pre-existing heart condition, Underwood made the decision to run against Hultgren, and despite predictions she would lose, won by a 5 point margin. Before the midterms, women had never held more than 84 of the 435 seats in the House. With 36 new women winning House seats, come January 3rd, that number has increased to 118! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 43 are women of color, and at least 3 are LGBTQ.
