@kristenanniebell : It’s my favorite day of the week — #FeaturedTeacherFriday! 📚😍Meet Courtney Thompson, a high school English teacher from Phoenix, Arizona! She’s been teaching for 7 years, shops at Goodwill w/ her own $ to stock her classroom, and most of her students are the 1st in their families to graduate high school. Here’s what she shared w/ me. “I have spent my entire career teaching in title 1 schools; that’s just a fancy way of saying the majority of our students come from families that are considered low-income and need assistance like fee waivers and free lunch. For many students, the meals they eat at our school are their only source of food and the fee waivers are their only opportunity at participating in sports or taking tests like the ACT/SAT. Something to know about me: I absolutely love to teach. I come from a long line of teachers in my family. I love seeing my students grow in their love for reading and become stronger writers. Though we read a lot of incredible books, all of them are filled with predominantly white characters. Our school population is about 70% Hispanic and 15% African American. So, I would love to be able to stock my library with literature that is culturally diverse, and more relatable to what these teens are dealing with: societal pressures, falling in love (and the subsequent heartbreak), friendships and those trials, being LGBTQ, growing up in poverty and violence, navigating the awkward years that are being a teen. I scour through Goodwill and go to library sales to help get books for my students, but a lot of contemporary fiction is just beyond my budget. I have a lot of students who will be the first in their family to either graduate and/or go to college, and it’s an honor to empower and encourage them on that journey.
