@mattmcgorry : Repost from @thelingerieaddict . This resonates deeply with me. I remember when I first became aware of my privilege and the oppression that so many people (people of color, women, trans folx, etc) face that I never had to think about. And I remember learning that if I wanted to change the world for the better, I had to be willing to challenge people and systems in ways that often make others uncomfortable. Some people interpret this as “not nice” because they don’t want to be challenged and have their hypocrisy pointed out. # “Niceness” and “getting along” with people were once qualities that I saw as some of the highest values that one could have. And while I still think that these things are “nice,” there are many more important qualities to develop. Every person on the front lines of working towards equal rights throughout history and presently, has faced charges of being “divisive,” and “unkind” (these are often the least severe things one can be called when it is aimed at people from marginalized identities). # Feminists and/or anti-racist activists face harsh criticism for not “doing it the right way” when we advocate for equal rights and human dignity. But usually this comes from people who have no history of fighting for equality. And from those who have the privilege not to think about these issues because they aren’t oppressed by them. We need more people of privilege committed to freedom, justice, and equality rather than “niceness.” Because what is niceness really worth, if it’s really just an excuse to preserve the status quo?
