School counselors play such a crucial role in the lives of our young people, pushing them to dream big, supporting them in times of crisis, and helping them see their own limitless potential and reserves of resilience. Laura Ross does all of that and so much more as a school counselor at Five Forks Middle School in Lawrenceville, GA. Using the principles of restorative justice, she’s reduced the number of discipline referrals for students of color. She’s hosted presentations about body confidence for her fellow educators, helping them better understand the challenges so many young people are facing. And she’s leading the charge to make sure her school is an inclusive, welcoming place for LGBTQ students. I am so inspired by Laura and so thrilled that she is the 2020 @weareasca National School Counselor of the Year. Congratulations, Laura! #SCOY2020 @reachhigher

I want to pay tribute to Roger Finlay. Roger was a very talented camera operator. We recently worked together on three movies. He was a true collaborator. I’ll never forget this one day when we were working together in Toronto. We were filming my close up for a scene and the director called cut and indicated that we’d be moving on to the next shot. I guess Roger saw the look on my face and understood that I wasn’t quite happy with my performance and was left feeling unsettled because I felt I could do better. For some reason I was being shy to speak up and ask for another take. I’m not normally shy to ask to go again, but in that moment, I was. So, he quietly said, you don’t seem satisfied, want to go again? Before I could even finish nodding yes, he called out to the director and 1st AD that the camera department had an issue on that last take and we needed to go once more. He took the responsibility for doing another take which took the pressure off of me. My eyes tear up as I type this because it was just such a kind gesture. He understood that we are all a team when on set and one of his teammates (me) needed a little extra support in that moment. It might not seem like that big of a deal but on that day, to me, it was. Isn’t that one of the greatest things we can do in life? To be there for each other? I think so. I will forever appreciate the kindness he showed me on those three movies. To his beautiful wife Anett, I send my love and support and deepest condolences. May Roger Rest In Peace.

A few years ago I got pulled over by a cop on the freeway near Long Beach. We got to talking and he told me that he had pulled Kobe over on two separate occasions for driving alone in the Carpool lane. We laughed and wondered out loud how many time he must have done that for him to catch him twice. Not long after that I heard Kobe got smart and was taking a helicopter to games and meetings in LA. Made sense to me. It would’ve been impossible to manage all that he had happening and drive to LA from Orange County and maintain any semblance of a life. Strange now that all that time saved ultimately didn’t amount to more time. I can’t stop thinking about his wife losing a husband and daughter while raising three others. It’s unfathomable, especially with so many eyes on it. I feel horrible for the other less familiar families who lost daughters and parents and partners and are equally devastated and grieving. I only met Kobe briefly a couple of times but I had huge admiration for this guy and have found it tough to find the words to express it the past couple days. Thank you for following your dreams big and small and letting your unadulterated passion for the game reach so many of us in our own little ways. You were a remarkable human. #MambaOut 🙏🏾🏀💔

I feel like this might be a good time to repost this. It was the 1st thing I read that offered me a tiny pause from devastating grief after my mom suddenly passed away without warning or reason. She was taking care of my dad who was sick & died 6 wks later. Something about this stuck w me. It embodied my mom. She never stopped, lived & loved life way too much to die. She’s still here. Everywhere.
